If you are like me, you probably don’t know much about Second Life.
Second Life is a downloadable program that enables its users, called “Residents”, to interact with each other through motional avatars. Residents can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade items (virtual property) and services from one another.
One estimate is that there are 20 million Second Life accounts, but that number could be far from correct. Let’s just say that SL is large enough that you have probably at least heard about it.
Turns out all these avatars in SL need something to wear. Sure there are limited choices when you first start SL, but many prefer to “upgrade” their look. Here’s an example from Mimi Coral who designs clothing (I think only for SL, not for actual wearing):

The detail of the dresses, hair and shoes are amazing to me. You can find Mimi in SL at <3 Cupcakes.
Men’s fashion is also “created” and sold in SL. Take a look at this from a blog called Second-Man.com:

This avatar is featuring a coat designed and for sale (in SL only) by a SL store called Muism. The wild thing is, you can buy any accessory you want from a number of stores in SL. Glasses, bling bling, belts – why go off the shelf when you can order from a high end shop? If you have any doubt that there is a demand for this, take a look at Second-Man.com.
The most robust SL blog I found is called New World Notes. In one article, the writer reports that online fashion designers can make “$50,000-$70,000″ per year. An amazing number to be sure.
